Praying For You Today In Rome

Feast of our Lady of Mercy
(Our Lady of Ransom)

During this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy,
we celebrate today the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy which was formerly the Feast of Our Lady of Ransom.

Mary’s mercy and love of virtue is beautifully illustrated in the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help,
especially in her mercy-filled eyes as she foresees her Son’s passion and death.

Your family name has been placed before the original icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help
in the Church of Sant’Alfonso (St. Alphonsus Ligouri) in Rome.

Our Lady of Ransom, Free Us From Muslims

September 24:  Feast of Our Lady of Ransom (Our Lady of Mercy)

The Blessed Virgin appeared in 1218 in separate visions to St. Peter Nolasco, St. Raymond of Penafort and James, king of Aragon, asking them to found a religious order dedicated to freeing Christian captives from the barbarous Muslim Saracens, who at the time held a great part of Spain.
On August 10, 1218, King James established the royal, military and religious Order of our Lady of Ransom (first known as the Order of St. Eulalia, now known as the Mercedarian Order), with the members granted the privilege of wearing his own arms on their breast. Most of the members were knights, and while the clerics recited the divine office in the commanderies, they guarded the coasts and delivered prisoners. This pious work spread everywhere and produced heroes of charity who collected alms for the ransom of Christians, and often gave themselves up in exchange for Christian prisoners.
This feast, kept only by the Order, was extended to the whole Church by Innocent XII in the 17th century.

In the Middle Ages, Muslims conquered a great part of Christian territory and had carried off into slavery many thousands of Christians. The Church decided to organize the work of ransoming slaves.

The Order of Our Lady of Ransom, called the Mercedarians, and founded by St. Peter Nolasco, ransomed 490,736 slaves between the years 1218 and 1632.

Our Blessed Mother herself appeared in a vision to St. Peter Nolasco, and requested him to found a religious order devoted to the rescue of captives. This was in 1218. Previous to that, since 1192, certain noblemen of Barcelona, Spain, had organized to care for the sick in hospitals and to rescue Christians from the Moors. St. Peter Nolasco, St. Raymond of Pennafort, and King James formed the new Order of Our Lady of Mercy. The group included religious priests who prayed and gathered the means, while the lay monks or knights went into the very camps of the Moors to buy back Christians, and, if necessary, take their very places. We have mentioned the magnitude of their success, a success that was won through the heavenly assistance of the Mother of Mercy, Our Lady of Ransom.

Were Your Irish Ancestors Slaves?

IRISH: THE FORGOTTEN WHITE SLAVES

They came as slaves: human cargo transported on British ships bound for the Americas. They were shipped by the hundreds of thousands and included men, women, and even the youngest of children.

Whenever they rebelled or even disobeyed an order, they were punished in the harshest ways. Slave owners would hang their human property by their hands and set their hands or feet on fire as one form of punishment. Some were burned alive and had their heads placed on pikes in the marketplace as a warning to other captives.

We don’t really need to go through all of the gory details, do we? We know all too well the atrocities of the African slave trade.

But are we talking about African slavery? King James VI and Charles I also led a continued effort to enslave the Irish. Britain’s Oliver Cromwell furthered this practice of dehumanizing one’s next door neighbor.

The Irish slave trade began when James VI sold 30,000 Irish prisoners as slaves to the New World. His Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies.

By the mid 1600s, the Irish were the main slaves sold to Antigua and Montserrat. At that time, 70% of the total population of Montserrat were Irish slaves.

Ireland quickly became the biggest source of human livestock for English merchants. The majority of the early slaves to the New World were actually white.

From 1641 to 1652, over 500,000 Irish were killed by the English and another 300,000 were sold as slaves. Ireland’s population fell from about 1,500,000 to 600,000 in one single decade.

Families were ripped apart as the British did not allow Irish dads to take their wives and children with them across the Atlantic. This led to a helpless population of homeless women and children. Britain’s solution was to auction them off as well.

During the 1650s, over 100,000 Irish children between the ages of 10 and 14 were taken from their parents and sold as slaves in the West Indies, Virginia and New England. In this decade, 52,000 Irish (mostly women and children) were sold to Barbados and Virginia.

Another 30,000 Irish men and women were also transported and sold to the highest bidder. In 1656, Cromwell ordered that 2000 Irish children be taken to Jamaica and sold as slaves to English settlers.

Many people today will avoid calling the Irish slaves what they truly were: Slaves. They’ll come up with terms like “Indentured Servants” to describe what occurred to the Irish. However, in most cases from the 17th and 18th centuries, Irish slaves were nothing more than human cattle.

As an example, the African slave trade was just beginning during this same period. It is well recorded that African slaves, not tainted with the stain of the hated Catholic theology and more expensive to purchase, were often treated far better than their Irish counterparts.

African slaves were very expensive during the late 1600s (£50 Sterling). Irish slaves came cheap (no more than £5 Sterling). If a planter whipped, branded or beat an Irish slave to death, it was never a crime. A death was a monetary setback, but far cheaper than killing a more expensive African.

The English masters quickly began breeding the Irish women for both their own personal pleasure and for greater profit. Children of slaves were themselves slaves, which increased the size of the master’s free workforce.

Even if an Irish woman somehow obtained her freedom, her kids would remain slaves of her master. Thus, Irish mothers, even with this new found emancipation, would seldom abandon their children and would remain in servitude.

In time, the English thought of a better way to use these women to increase their market share: The settlers began to breed Irish women and girls (many as young as 12) with African men to produce slaves with a distinct complexion. These new “mulatto” slaves brought a higher price than Irish livestock and, likewise, enabled the settlers to save money rather than purchase new African slaves.

This practice of interbreeding Irish females with African men went on for several decades and was so widespread that, in 1681, legislation was passed “forbidding the practice of mating Irish slave women to African slave men for the purpose of producing slaves for sale.” In short, it was stopped only because it interfered with the profits of a large slave transport company.

England continued to ship tens of thousands of Irish slaves for more than a century. Records state that, after the 1798 Irish Rebellion, thousands of Irish slaves were sold to both America and Australia. There were horrible abuses of both African and Irish captives. One British ship even dumped 1,302 slaves into the Atlantic Ocean so that the crew would have plenty of food to eat.

There is little question the Irish experienced the horrors of slavery as much (if not more, in the 17th Century) as the Africans did. There is also little question that those brown, tanned faces you witness in your travels to the West Indies are very likely a combination of African and Irish ancestry.

In 1839, Britain finally decided on it’s own to end its participation in Satan’s highway to hell and stopped transporting slaves. While their decision did not stop pirates from doing what they desired, the new law slowly concluded this chapter of Irish misery.

But, if anyone, black or white, believes that slavery was only an African experience, then they’ve got it completely wrong. Irish slavery is a subject worth remembering, not erasing from our memories.

But, why is it so seldom discussed? Do the memories of hundreds of thousands of Irish victims not merit more than a mention from an unknown writer?

Or is their story to be the one that their English masters intended: To completely disappear as if it never happened.

None of the Irish victims ever made it back to their homeland to describe their ordeal. These are the lost slaves; the ones that time and biased history books conveniently forgot.
Interesting historical note: the last person killed at the Salem Witch Trials was Ann Glover. She and her husband had been shipped to Barbados as a slave in the 1650's. Her husband was killed there for refusing to renounce Catholicism.

In the 1680's she was working as a housekeeper in Salem. After some of the children she was caring for got sick she was accused of being a witch.

At the trial they demanded she say the Lord's Prayer. She did so, but in Gaelic, because she didn't know English. She was then hung.

Sep 14: She Brought You Here To Me

During World War One, on September 14th, in Noyon, France, a young corporal lay dying among wounded comrades. The officers had signaled to me that the poor fellow was lying in a field. When I got near him, leaning down, I said, “It’s me!”

“Who are you?” he asked. I realized that the man’s head was bleeding, his forehead was split open and his eyes had been gouged out. “I’m the chaplain,” I said, very moved, “I am here at your side!”
“Oh, Mr. Chaplain, the Blessed Virgin is so good!” Then he raised his right arm that was holding a Rosary and exclaimed: “All night long, I have been asking her to send a priest this way. I am so glad you’re here!”
He was shaking with fever. I took him to a nearby farm and dressed his wounds. He was beaming with happiness. His leg had been broken in the attack. A German passing by had given him a drink; another, at close range, shot him three times, the last bullet opening his forehead.
During his night of agony every time I bent over him, this young man kept saying: “Hail Mary …” and kept repeating: “How glad I am, Mr. Chaplain! The Holy Virgin is so good to have brought you here to me!”
He died three days later with a smile on his face.

Why I'm Joining The National Anthem Protest

Here is just some of the oppression that I am protesting:

·         Cake bakers are being fined and face years in jail for declining to make cakes for homosexual weddings

·         Air Force chaplains face court martial for opposing homosexual marriage

·         Catholic nuns are bullied and told they must pay for contraceptives and abortion pills for others

• The most important thing for Obama to do after a mass shooting by two Jihadists, is disarm American Citizens.

• The American Navy is diminished to 1917 Pre-World War I levels of only 300 ships. The Army is at pre-1940 levels. The
Air Force scraps 500 planes and planned to retire the use of the A-10 Thunderbolt close air support fighter.  A further draw down of another 40,000 military personnel is in progress.

• Half of our aircraft carriers are recalled for maintenance by Obama rendering the Atlantic unguarded, NONE are in the
Middle East.

• Obama has to empty Guantanamo Bay of captured Jihadists and let them loose in Jihad-friendly Islamic states.  He demands
to close the facility.

• Obama will negotiate with terrorists and trade FIVE Taliban commanders for a deserter and Jihad sympathizer.

• There is no money for American poor, disabled veterans, jobless Americans, hungry Americans, or displaced Americans
but there is endless money for Obama's "Syrian refugee" resettlement programs.

• America has reduced its nuclear stockpiles to 1950 levels, as Obama's stated goal of a nuke-free America by the time he leaves office continues unint

  • Obama made a secret deal with Iran giving that largest support of terrorism a pathway to nuclear weapons and HUNDREDS of BILLIONS of dollars handed over to fund their programs.

• Obama APOLOGIZES to Muslim states and sponsors of terror worldwide for acts of aggression, war and sabotage THEY
perpetrate against our soldiers.

• It is Obama policy that secular Middle East dictators that were benign or friendly to the West, must be replaced by Islamists and the Muslim Brotherhood.

• Obama rapidly withdrew our troops from Iraq and the Middle East, giving rise to ISIS.

• Islam is taught in schools. Christianity and the bible are banned in schools.

• We must allow prayer rugs everywhere and allow for Islamic prayer in schools, airports and businesses.

• We must stop serving pork in prisons.

• We are inundated with law suits by Muslims who are offended by American culture.

• We must allow burkas to be worn everywhere even though you have no idea who or what is covered up under them.

• Muslims are suing employers and refusing to do their jobs if they personally deem it conflicts with Sharia Law.

• The Attorney General of the United States vows to prosecute anyone who engages in "anti-Muslim speech".

• Jihadists who engage in terrorism and openly admit they acted in the name of Islam and ISIS, are emphatically declared
they are NOT Islamic by our leaders and/or their actions are determined NOT to be terrorism, but other nebulous terms like 'workplace violence."

• There is an ammunition shortage in the USA.

• Obama cannot attend the Christian Funerals of a Supreme Court Justice and a former First Lady
because of previous (seemingly unimportant) commitments.

·  Obama won’t attend the funeral of a flag-rank Officer (Gen. Greene) killed in action; he played golf.  But he sends a big delegation to Michael Brown’s funeral.  He sends a minor delegation to Margaret Thatcher’s funeral.  He won’t acknowledge Chris Kyle’s murder but he’ll fly the Flag at half-mast for Whitney Houston.

I’m not sure the majority of Americans recognize the seriousness of the situation and how much “progress” has been made by Islam and radical secularist Democrats these last 7 years.

If you agree, let’s link our arms together with our friends and encourage them to join this protest against this oppression by Obama and his Democrat allies.

Mexico Giving Africans Free Passes To Break Into USA

Mexico Helping Unvetted African Migrants to U.S. Border, Many From Al-Shabaab Terror Hotbed

Hundreds of African asylum seekers have flooded Mexican border cities with the U.S. in an effort to get to California and Texas to obtain U.S. asylum — many of the unvetted migrants are from the terror hotbed of Somalia. Rather than having to hide along the way, the African migrants have been getting a special permit from Mexico that gives them a free pass to the U.S. border.

The influx of asylum seekers from African countries who entered Mexico illegally has been building for several weeks as hundreds of individuals continue to arrive primarily to Mexicali to cross into Calexico, California, in order to seek asylum. Mexican immigration authorities have been spotted ferrying the asylum seekers from shelters and plazas to international bridges with the U.S.
Mexican immigration authorities have largely kept quiet about the wave of African migrants who have been entering Mexico through that country’s southern border and then making their way to the U.S. border to seek asylum. Some of the cities they seek include Calexico and San Ysidro, California, and El Paso, Texas.
According to Mexico’s El Universal African migrants have been entering Mexico and almost immediately turning themselves in to agents with the National Immigration Institute (INM).

Once in custody, the migrants receive a special 20 day pass that gives them the freedom to move about the country. The purpose of the pass is to allow them to get to the U.S. border. According to El Universal, INM issues the permit to individuals from countries that Mexico does not have diplomatic relations with. The permit makes it easier for the INM to have the migrants leave the country voluntarily than to deport them to their countries of origin.

During a one week period in late August, there were 424 African migrants who turned themselves in to INM agents in the city of Tapachula, Chiapas.

Drinks of the Day: St. Moritz Cocktails & Wines

St. Moritz (Mauritius) was born in Thebes, Egypt and may have been black.  He rose through the ranks of the Roman Army to become leader of the all-Christian Theban Legion of 6,600 soldiers.   While deployed to Gaul (France), the legion was decimated (1 of every 10 soldiers beaten to death) for refusing to worship idols or to attack Christians.   They still refused, and another 10% were beaten to death.  They still refused, and all of them were beaten to death.
The site of the massacre was called Argaunum and is now called Saint-Maurice-en-Valais in Switzerland.
St. Maurice was the patron of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his sword and spurs were used in the coronation of their emperors until that empire ended in 1916.
Many towns and villages in Europe are named for St. Maurice.
St. Moritz’s feast day is September 22.

St. Moritz Cocktail:
            1 oz. kummel liqueur
            ¾ oz. scotch
            1 lemon wedge for garnish
Kummel is a caraway-seed liqueur from Germany that may be hard to find in the USA, so might substitute another herbal liqueur.

Maurice Cocktail:
            1 oz. gin
            ½ oz. sweet vermouth
            ½ oz. dry vermouth
            ½ oz. orange juice
1 dash aromatic bitters or pastis

Wines:
Switzerland produces several white and red wines from the Saint-Maurice-en-Valais region.
France has over 60 communes named after St. Maurice including several that produce St. Mauritius wines including Cotes du Rhone Villages Saint –Maurice-sur-Eygues.
St. Maurice is the patron saint of Austria which produces wines in his name.
The Piedmont area of Italy exports several wines named for St. Maurice to the USA.
The island of Sardinia and Manresa in Spain produce wines in his honor.

Beers:
Sorry, there are no beers named for St. Maurice

Toast of the Day:
St. Maurice is the patron saint of the pope’s Swiss Guard, and they will be celebrating him today.
Raise your glass to St. Maurice and the Swiss Guards and in the words of St. Maurice say, “May we perish innocent rather than live guilty!

Happy St. Maurice's Day!

St. Maurice and Companions

St. Maurice (Mauritius) was an officer in the Theban Legion, a unit in the army of the Emperor Maximian Herculius. This Legion, from Upper Egypt, was entirely Christian, and when Maximian ordered his soldiers at Octodurum (now called Martigny, Switzerland) to sacrifice to the gods as a way of ensuring victory in battle, Maurice and two other officers led the Theban Legion in refusing, and the legion withdrew to Agaunum (now St.-Maurice, in the Swiss Canton of Valais). With Maurice encouraging the legionnaires to remain constant, even after the Emperor had the legion decimated (every tenth man killed), the legionnaires answered, "We have arms in our hands, but we do not resist because we would rather die innocent than live by any sin." Maximian ordered the rest of his army to kill the Christian legionnaires. The Theban legion numbered about 6,600 men, but the actual number killed remains unclear. Others were martyred for refusing to share in the spoils of the legionnaires. St. Eucherius, a fifth-century bishop of Lyons, noted that many miracles took place at the shrine of these martyrs. They are buried under the Basilica of St.-Maurice-en-Valais in Switzerland.

6,000 Christian Soldiers Executed

The Theban Legion

The Theban legion numbered more than six thousand men. They marched from the East into Gaul, and proved their loyalty at once to their Emperor and to their God. They were encamped near the Lake of Geneva, under the Emperor Maximian, when they got orders to turn their swords against the Christian population, and refused to obey. In his fury Maximian ordered them to be decimated. The order was executed once and again, but they endured this without a murmur or an effort to defend themselves.

St. Maurice, the chief captain in this legion of martyrs, encouraged the rest to persevere and follow their comrades to heaven. "Know, O Emperor," he said, "that we are your soldiers, but we are servants also of the true God. In all things lawful we will most readily obey, but we cannot stain our hands in this innocent blood. We have seen our comrades slain, and we rejoice at their honor. We have arms, but we resist not, for we had rather die without shame than live by sin."

As the massacre began, these generous soldiers flung down their arms, offered their necks to the sword, and suffered themselves to be butchered in silence.

Why you should be in Switzerland today

September 22 – Saint Maurice (San Moritz) – was he really a black saint?

Saint Maurice (also Moritz, Morris, or Mauritius) was the leader of the legendary Roman Theban Legion in the 3rd century, and one of the favorite and most widely venerated saints of that group. He was the patron saint of several professions, locales, and kingdoms. He is also a highly revered saint in the Oriental Orthodox churches.

Maurice was born in 250 A.D. in Thebes, an ancient city in Egypt near the site of the Aswan Dam. He was brought up in the region of Thebes (Luxor—Egypt) and became a soldier in the Roman army. He was gradually promoted until he became the leader of the Theban legion, formed of 6600 soldiers.[4] Maurice was an acknowledged Christian at a time when the Church was considered to be a threat to the crumbling Roman Empire. Yet, he moved easily in the pagan society of his day.[5]

According to the hagiographical material, the legion, entirely composed of Christians, had been called from Thebes in Egypt to Gaul to assist Maximian to defeat a revolt by the bagaudae.[3] The Theban Legion was dispatched with orders to clear the St. Bernard Pass across Mt. Blanc. Before going into battle, they were instructed to offer sacrifices to the pagan gods and pay homage to the emperor.[5]

However, when Maximian ordered them to harass some local Christians, they refused and Maximian ordered the unit to be punished. Every tenth soldier was killed, a military punishment known as decimation. More orders followed, they still refused, partly because of Maurice's encouragement, and a second decimation was ordered. In response to their refusal to use violence against fellow Christians, Maximian ordered all the remaining members of the 6,666 unit to be executed. The place in Switzerland where this occurred, known as Agaunum, is now Saint Maurice-en-Valais, site of the Abbey of Saint Maurice-en-Valais.

So reads the earliest account of their martyrdom, contained in the public letter Eucherius, bishop of Lyon (c. 434–450), addressed to his fellow bishop Salvius. Alternate versions[citation needed] have the legion refusing Maximian's orders only after discovering a town they had just destroyed had been inhabited by innocent Christians, or that the emperor had them executed when they refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods.

Matthew: Friend of Jesus & Evangelist of the East - But Not An Author

Matthew (AKA:  Levi) was an Apostle and Evangelist but not the author of the Book of Matthew.
Feast of St Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist

Born at Capernaum, St Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist, was working as a tax collector when he was called by Jesus. He wrote his gospel in Hebrew and is said to have preached in the East.
[cf the Office of Readings, for the Feast of Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist (September 21), Liturgy of the Hours].

He was the son of Alpheus and is known as Levi in the gospels of Mark and Luke. Thus, it is thought that Matthew is the name given him by Christ. He is represented with an angel as a sign of his new life as a messenger of Christ. The angel (or figure of a man) can be found in the symbolism of Revelation, Ezekiel and elsewhere in Scripture. St Matthew, himself, is only mentioned five times in the New Testament.

He is the patron saint of accountants and bankers, bookkeepers, financial officers and tax collectors, stock brokers, guards and security personnel, among others.

Why You Should Eat Blood Sausages & Gelato Today

Remember in the movie “Godfather Part II” when Vito Corleone assassinated the bully Don Fanucci during the San Gennaro Festival in Little Italy NYC?
Remember in the movie “Godfather Part III” when Vito’s grandson, Vinnie, assassinated Joey Zasa during the San Gennaro Festival in Little Italy NYC?
Good times!  Be sure to also celebrate today with blood red wine from Italy!

Raise Your Gelato Cone!

For the past 89 years, the area around Mulberry Street in New York City–famously known as Little Italy–has held a feast in honor of St Januarius–except here they call him San Gennaro.

But why here?

It seems that, back in the day, when Italians made their way to the New World, many Neapolitans settled in this area, bringing their beloved saint with them. Here, they continued the celebrations of their patron saint, and eventually, it became one of the city’s best-known celebrations.

The festival has a website–www.sangennaro.org–that lists events and celebrities at the event. But today, being San Gennaro’s actual feast day, they’re pulling out the big Catholic guns. If you’re in New York City today, get to Little Italy!
  •  2:00-3:00 PM: High Mass in honor of San Gennaro at the Church of the Most Precious Blood at 109 Mulberry Street
  • 3:00 PM: Procession of the Statue of San Gennaro through the streets of Little Italy
  • 4:00 PM: Unveiling of the world’s largest gelato cone…
Well… even the saints had to eat, too, right?! And, after all, it’s a celebration! Mangia! If you can make it, you’re sure to find some of the city’s best Italian/Italian-American food, like sausages, zeppole, and more!

The Mystery of San Gennaro's Blood

Sep 19: Feast of St. Januarius (San Gennaro)

San Gennaro, the Bishop of Naples (or Benevento) was beheaded, with his Companions, at Pozzuoli in A.D. 305 by Diocletian for refusing to worship pagan idols. Ever since at least A.D. 1389, his dried blood, a solid mass inside a silver reliquary in the Cappella del Tesoro (Chapel of the Treasure) of the 13th c. Naples Cathedral (the "Duomo"), liquifies, and sometimes even "boils"; if it doesn't, disaster is said to follow.

His blood is kept in two vials inside the reliquary which is topped by a crown and a cross. When the Bishop takes the vial to the Altar that holds the Saint's head, the people, who gather by the thousands, pray that the blood becomes liquid once again. If the miracle takes place, the officiant proclaims, "Il miracolo é fatto!" and waves a white handkerchief. Then a Te Deum is sung and the reliquary is taken to the altar rail so the faithful can kiss the vial.

This miracle takes place on the first Saturday before the first Sunday of May (and during the 8 days that follow), on his Feast (and during the octave of his Feast), and, sometimes, on December 16.

Because he is the Patron Saint of Napoli, he is dear to the Southern Italian people, and in New York City, where there's a large Italian American population, there's a huge San Gennaro celebration in Little Italy.

Januarius' Blood

Will his blood turn to liquid again today?  Maybe it’s something in the air of Naples that makes this happen . . .

September 19 - St. Januarius – Martyr (died 305?)

Little  is known about the life of  Januarius. He is believed to have been martyred in the Emperor Diocletian's persecution of 305. Legend has it that after Januarius was thrown to the bears in the amphitheater of Pozzuoli, he was beheaded, and his blood ultimately brought to Naples.

“A dark mass that half fills a hermetically sealed four-inch glass container, and is preserved in a double reliquary in the Naples cathedral as the blood of St. January, liquefies 18 times during the year....

This phenomenon goes back to the 14th century....

Tradition connects it with a certain Eusebia, who had allegedly collected the blood after the martyrdom....

The ceremony accompanying the liquefaction is performed by holding the reliquary close to the altar on which is located what is believed to be the martyr's head. While the people pray, often tumultuously, the priest turns the reliquary up and down in the full sight of the onlookers until the liquefaction takes place....

Various experiments have been applied, but the phenomenon eludes natural explanation.

There are, however, similar miraculous claims made for the blood of John the Baptist, Stephen, Pantaleon, Patricia, Nicholas of Tolentino and Aloysius Gonzaga—nearly all in the neighborhood of Naples” (Catholic Encyclopedia).

Michaelmas Embertide

St. Michael’s Feast Day is September 29 (Michaelmas).  Therefore, September is the Month of St. Michael.  It is also the month of a new season (Autumn), and therefore the month of an Embertide which means the week before a new season and a time to celebrate Michaelmas Embertide.

Remember that lore says that the weather conditions of each of the three days of an Embertide foretell the weather of the next three months.
So the weather seen on Wednesday (Sep 16) of Michaelmas Embertide predicts the weather of the coming October.
The weather on Friday (Sep 18) weather foretells the weather of November.
The weather on Saturday (Sep 19) foretells the weather of December.
Make a note of the weather on those three days and see if the old tales are true!

Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 14 September, 1 are known as "Michaelmas Embertide" because that same month celebrates the Feast of St. Michael on September 29 and September is the Month of Michael.  Michaelmas Embertide comes near the beginning of Autumn (September, October, November). The Lessons focus on the Old Covenant's Day of Atonement and the fast of the seventh month, but start off with this prophecy from Amos 9:13-15:
Behold the days come, when the ploughman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed, and the mountains shall dop sweetness, and every hill shall be tilled. And I will bring back the captivity of My people Israel, and they shall build the abandoned cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine of them; and shall make gardens and eat the fruits of them; and I will plant them upon their land: and I will no more pluck them out of their land which I have given them; saith the Lord thy God.
Like all Embertides but Whit Embertide, the Lessons end with the story of the three boys in the fiery furnace, as told by Daniel.

The Gospel readings recount how Jesus exorcised demons from a possessed boy and tells the disciples about fasting to cast out unclean spirits (Matthew 9:16-28), forgave Mary Magdalen (Luke 7:36-50), and healed the woman on the sabbath after telling the parable of the fig tree (Luke 13:6-17).
